Souhei Kobayashi, a distinguished figure in the world of ultrarunning, he is IAU Honorary Life Member and President of Japan Ultrarunners Associations of Japan (JUA). Born in Tokyo in 1939, currently a resident of Saitama, Japan, Kobayashi's impact extends far beyond his personal achievements, as he has played a pivotal role in shaping the landscape of ultrarunning both in Japan and on the international stage.
Kobayashi's ascent to the upper echelons of ultrarunning governance began with his appointment as a General Council Member of the International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU). His dedication and expertise soon saw him rise to the position of Executive Council member, where he represented the Asian district of IAU in 2000.
A testament to his commitment to the sport, Kobayashi organized the IAU World Championships on three separate occasions in Japan. The events held at Lake Saroma in 1994 and 2005, as well as the one at River Shimanto in 1998.
In 2009, Kobayashi was entrusted with the role of President of the Japan Ultrarunners Associations of Japan (JUA). His appointment to this esteemed position not only underscored his influence within the Japanese running community but also signified his unwavering commitment to the development of ultramarathon in Asian countries.
While Kobayashi's administrative prowess and leadership within the ultrarunning community are undeniable, he has completed numerous full marathons with a best time of 3 hours and 24 minutes for the full marathon and an impressive 11 hours, 19 minutes, and 46 seconds for the ultramarathon. Today, as he embraces a more relaxed approach to running, Kobayashi finds joy in what he terms "SSD" – Slow Short Distance running.
