Mieke Hekkers passed away

Dutch Ultrarunner Mieke Hekkers passed away on February 22nd, 2021 at the age of 57 after a struggle against cancer.

Mieke made her debut as ultrarunner in 2008 when she run 50 km at the RUN Winschoten. Three years later she was selected to the national team and took part of IAU 100 km World Championships in Winschoten, The Netherlands. She was subsequently selected to represent the Netherlands on 3 occasions (2011,2013 and 2015) at the IAU 24 Hour World Championships.

The ultrarunning community was hit hard by the news of the passing away of Mieke Hekkers. She was a very integral part of the Netherlands national team having run in several IAU World Championships. I know several of us will miss her smiling face at these events. I do extend my and the IAU community's deepest condolences to the family of Mieke and the ultrarunning community of the Netherlands.

Nadeem Khan, IAU President
