Historical milestone for the IAU and WMA cooperation

Back in September 2022, IAU and WMA signed a long term partnership agreement where both parties agreed to expand cooperation and include 50 km and 24H master championships. Both organizations will facilitate IAU World Championships to accommodate the WMA Championships as much as possible.

The 2023 IAU 50 km World Championships is a great opportunity to materialize the agreement. On November 5th 2023 both IAU 50 km World Championships and WMA 50 km World Championships will take place. This is in line with both organization strategy to develop ultrarunning globally.

The 50km World Championships is gaining popularity in the ultrarunning circuit. It was a clear choice for us to expand our collaboration with the World Masters Athletics to include the 50km distance in our continued partnership. We are confident that this will excite more athletes to participate in this discipline and further elevate the growing participation in the sport.

Nadeem Khan, IAU President

These championships are great opportunity for runners to benefit from our organizations’ combined expertise: IAU is responsible for the Ultra distance competitions throughout the world, and WMA is responsible for world masters’ competitions in athletics. We hope runners are as excited as we are of the first of many wonderful 50 km and 24H championships.

Margit Jungmann, WMA President
