After the colors were presented by Boys Scout Troop 9 from Ceres, California, and a beautiful rendition of the Star Spangled Banner was sung by Frankie Bavaro, the runners were off!
Gina Slaby (American and World 100 Mile Record Holder) and Pam Smith (former American 100 Mile Record Holder and U.S. 100k Team Member) obviously did not plan on taking it out easy. They routinely were clicking 2 minute laps and for the first 6 hours of the race, they were both under the 100 mile World Record pace. However, Chikara Omine (U.S. 100k Team Member) was slightly ahead, routinely breaking 2 minutes per lap.
