100 Year Celebration for the Comrades Marathon

100 Year Celebration for the Comrades Marathon

Monday, the 24th May 2021 is remarkable day for the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA). 100 years from that day on 24th May 1921 the first Comrades Marathon was hosted. IAU would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Comrades Marathon "The Ultimate Human Race" on completing 100 years of existence.

We will remember Comrades’ origins, owed primarily to the inspiration and tireless efforts of a humble railroad engine driver and soldier, Vic Clapham, who returned from war with the vision of staging a living memorial to the suffering, loss of life, spirit, fortitude and camaraderie of the soldiers with whom he had shared the devastation of World War I.

Cheryl Winn, CMA Chairperson

Historical milestones are rare in the world of sports. Continuity and longevity are a true testament of not only the popularity of the event but also the commitment of the race organizers and the Board on ensuring that the event continues with the highest levels of organization and performance.

I can attest that Comrades is one of the most paramount ultrarunning events on the international calendar. Ultrarunners take pride on their participation in this historical event proudly showcasing their finisher's medals to their colleagues. The race has tactfully balanced a mass participation event while still maintaining a very elite field to the competition. We, on the IAU, are delighted to have Comrades as a Gold Labelled event.

Nadeem Khan, IAU President

Once again, on behalf of the global ultrarunnig community, IAU congratulate you Ms. Winn, the Comrades Marathon Board, your staff and volunteers and hundreds of thousands of runners who have toed the line at Comrades. We wish you another 100 years of successful event.
