World Athletics Opens Bidding for the 2029 World Mountain & Trail Running Championships 2029
World Athletics has officially launched the bidding process for the 2029 World Mountain & Trail Running Championships (WMTRC), inviting interested Member Federations, to explore the opportunity to host one of the world's leading off-road running events.
Organised jointly by World Athletics (WA), the World Mountain Running Association (WMRA), the International Trail Running Association (ITRA) and the International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU), the Championships bring together approximately 1,300 athletes from around 80 national teams to compete across mountain running, trail running and ultrarunning disciplines.
The WMTRC continues to experience significant growth in participation, media coverage and global audience reach, providing host destinations with a unique platform to showcase their region to the international running community.
Interested parties are encouraged to review the official WMTRC 2029 Bid Summary for details on the event format, hosting requirements, rights and obligations, financial commitments, and the bidding process.
The deadline for submitting a formal Expression of Interest is October 01st 2026.
