With one year to go, preparations are gathering pace for the 2027 World Mountain and Trail Running Championships (WMTRC), which will take place in Cape Town, South Africa, from 6th to 10th October 2027.
The fourth edition of the championships will be a landmark event as the first WMTRC to be hosted in Africa, bringing together the world’s best mountain and trail runners for five days of championship racing against the spectacular backdrop of Table Mountain and the wider landscapes of Cape Town.
The IAU is proud to be an event partner alongside the World Mountain Running Association (WMRA), International Trail Running Association (ITRA) and World Athletics, working closely with the Local Organising Committee to support the delivery of a successful and memorable championship.
As preparations continue, athletes, Member Federations and the wider mountain and trail running community can look forward to an event that will showcase the diversity and challenge of the sport while providing a unique opportunity to experience one of the world’s great mountain running destinations.

The Local Organising Committee, together with the international partners, is now working towards the final stages of planning, with further information on courses, entries and other championship arrangements to be communicated as preparations progress.
With just 12 months remaining, the countdown to Cape Town 2027 is now officially underway, and anticipation is building for what promises to be a landmark edition of the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships.
