The International Association of Ultrarunners is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Malcolm Campbell, the IAU’s first President and later Honorary Life President. Malcolm was a pioneering force in the development of ultrarunning and a central figure in shaping the IAU during its formative years.
A dedicated athlete, Malcolm rose from marathon running to become one of Britain’s leading ultrarunners, completing every major UK ultra of his era and achieving remarkable performances in multi‑day racing. His achievements included 420 miles in a 6‑day race, victory in the Blackburn 24‑hour event, a 3,559‑mile run across the United States, and a 1,000‑mile finish at Gateshead—among many others that established him as a global ultrarunning figure.
“With Malcolm Campbell’s departure, an ultrarunning epoch has passed. I met Malcolm when running one of my first ultras from Grantham, his home town to Lincoln and back in the Lincolnshire 100K race in about 1985. He was encouraging all those who took part and had just founded the IAU with some other key pioneers. He was ever present at these races and I have fond memories of the early international events where I was part of the British team. However I also have him to blame for encouraging me to take on the mantle of the IAU General Secretary when he retired in 2004 and the stewardship of the sport fell into a new group of hands. I have never regretted his influence and hope that we can continue to honour his memory with the growth of the sport.”

Beyond his athletic accomplishments, Malcolm’s vision and leadership were instrumental in building the international structure that supports ultrarunning today. His commitment, integrity, and passion for the sport have left a lasting legacy that will continue to guide and inspire the ultrarunning community worldwide.
