IAU Vice President Jacek Bedkowski visited Latvia on May 01st /02nd to observe the Riga–Valmiera 107km, an IAU Silver Label race, supporting organisers in their efforts to achieve Gold Label status. The event also hosted the Latvian National 100km Championships, where he presented medals to the National Champions.

During the visit, Bedkowski met with federation officials, Toms Komass, Matiss Vecvagaris and race organisers, Andris Dudels, Rimants Liepins, Arturs Onzuls, Artis Zarins, to discuss Latvia’s interest in hosting the IAU Championships. As part of the review, he inspected the proposed 24‑hour course — a 1.4 km traffic‑free park loop. The venue is designed to accommodate around 450 athletes, with suitable locations identified for key ceremonies and athlete services.

He also toured nearby hotels offering over 400 beds, all located immediately beside the course to minimize transit time for athletes and staff.

Watching the Riga–Valmiera 107 km, I was struck by the immense pride every participant took in the journey and by the incredible support from the cities involved. Given this level of local passion and the technical capabilities I’ve observed, I see real potential for Latvia to host a successful IAU Championship.”

Bedkowski concluded that Latvia demonstrates strong organisational commitment and that the proposed course and infrastructure provide a solid foundation for a high‑quality international event.
