The IAU Council has conducted a strategic review of the financial requirements for hosting IAU Championships. We recognize that escalating global costs present a significant hurdle for potential hosts, even those with excellent technical capabilities. To address these challenges and ensure the long-term sustainability of our events, the following updates have been implemented:
The IAU has made the decision to suspend travel grants for at least the 2026 season. While these grants historically covered a portion of team travel expenses, they represented a substantial financial burden for host organizations. By removing this requirement, we aim to lower the entry barrier for prospective hosts.
- Impact on Federations: Member Federations will continue to receive free accommodation and meals for a designated number of athletes per team as it was before.
- Strategic Goal: This move allows local organizers to focus their financial resources on delivering a world-class championship experience.
- Evaluation Period: We will monitor the number of championship applications received following this change and reevaluate the situation at the end of the 2026 cycle to determine the future of travel grants.
In a proactive move to secure our flagship event, the IAU is providing direct financial support to the Local Organizing Committee in Spain for the 2026 IAU 100km World Championships. This targeted support ensures that our premier 100km event remains on the calendar and meets the high standards expected by our international athletes and stakeholders.
