The International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU) Council held its latest meeting on August 15th 2026, bringing together Council members to review current activities and discuss preparations for upcoming championships and the continued development of ultrarunning.
The Council received updates on engagement with international federations, with recent meetings held with federations in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Poland, Egypt, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Discussions focused on strengthening participation in IAU events and exploring future hosting opportunities.
Preparations for the 2026 IAU 100 km World Championships in Spain are progressing well, with final entries being processed and arrangements for the technical and medical meetings, as well as athlete transportation, being finalised.
The Council also reviewed preparations for a number of future championships in 2027 and 2028. Preparations are continuing for the 2027 World Mountain and Trail Running Championships in Cape Town, with a final site visit planned for October and the necessary government approvals secured.
Organisational development was also an important focus of the meeting. The Council discussed the implementation of the newly published IAU Safeguarding Policy, including the need for dedicated safeguarding support and appropriate training. Proposed constitutional amendments were also considered, including potential changes to Council representation and increasing the percentage of women on the Council.
The meeting provided an opportunity for the Council to review progress across the organisation and agree priorities as the IAU continues to develop its international championship programme and support the growth of ultrarunning worldwide.
