Austria, team results from 2021 IAU 6H Virtual Global Solidarity Weekend

We are pleased to share with you results from Austria. After a year in which only two ultra-races had been organized in Austria due to the pandemic Ultrarunning Austria on a cold spring weekend warmly welcomed the opportunity of a global ultrarunning event. When Global Solidarity Weekend arrived six of them lined up at different locations across Austria and, in one case, Germany.

We are taking this opportunity to present the Team with some interesting facts and feedback from the event.

Carola Bendl-Tschiedel

Ten years ago Carola set her personal marathon best with 2:48:53 in Frankfurt. Since then and despite remaining a marathon runner of love she has stunningly left her mark on the Austrian ultrarunning scene. In 2015 she represented Austria at the IAU 100k World Championships in Winschoten and placed 35th in 8:49:08. In 2019 she won a team bronze medal at the IAU 50k World Championships in Brasov and in 2020 was the runner-up at the Austrian 24h national championships in Blumau with 203,66 km.

Coming back from a fracture of her metatarsal bone Carola has embraced today’s event to walk around on both of her feet for the first time in weeks. Like a true ultrarunner she has persisted and kept on walking the streets of Vienna for 17.5 km. This is true sports(wo)manship, and the golden statue of Johann Strauß played her a waltz in admiration.

Markus Hartlauer

Giving his ultrarunning debut in 2014 Markus has made significant progress in the last two years. In 2019 he set Austria’s 48 h seasonal best with 306 km. Last year he finished fourth at the Austrian national championships in Blumau reaching 207.16 km. There is a high chance that he will represent Austria at this year’s IAU 24h World Championships in Timisoara.

At 6 a.m. on a cold and snowy Saturday morning Markus lined up at Stadtgut Steyr in Upper Austria, which has been the location of one of Austria’s traditional 100 k and 6 h ultradistance races (even in 2020!).

“During the race I felt great an managed to run at an even pace. From time to time I had to stop since I had my provisions in the back of my car. For several laps I was accompanied by my club colleague Gerald who later on cheered me for several laps. Apart from him from time to time I saw other runners and walkers. Although it was a cold and rather quiet day time passed by quickly. After four hours in the running I realized that I might reach more than 70 km for the first time in my life. That felt exciting. In the final stages of the six hours it started snowing intensely and the wind became pretty cold. When I finally crossed the virtual finish line 72.86 km meant a personal best.”

Dietmar Korntner

Debuting in ultrarunning 2011 Didi set remarkable performances between 2015 and 2017 culminating in 2016 when he set Austria’s seasonal bests for 6 h (81.781 km) and 24 h (243,068 km). He was the last Austrian reaching more that 240 k and only the second after almost ten years then. He represented Austria at several IAU championships. Didi joined Team Austria on this weekend to celebrate ultrarunning solidarity.

Running alone (and therefore without a photo) on Saturday in 5 cm of fresh fallen snow around a slippery track in the Bavarian place Arrach Didi finished his longest run in years and reached 50.29 km.

Wolfgang Michl

Wolfgang has entered the ultrarunning scene in 2016. As of 2019 he has done really great winning the Austrian 100 k national championships in 7:38:49 (seasonal best 2019 in Austria) and the Austrian 24 h national championships in 2020 (225.740 k seasonal best 2020 in Austria). He participated in the IAU 50 k World Championships in Brasov 2019 (3:20:27) and will hopefully represent Austria in this year’s IAU 24h World Championships in Romania. Wolfgang did absolutely great on Sunday. Congratulations!

Martin Tschiedel

A constant force of the Austrian ultrarunning scene Martin has gained several medals at team competitions in Austrian national championships in the 100 k and 24 h. He is an inventive creator of charity projects, as, for instance, and among others, running up Mount Everest on his apartment’s one story staircase in 2020.

Martin climbed on his treadmill to escape the winter in Vienna at the first spring weekend. Not feeling strong at the beginning and dreaming of returning to bed after 3 km in the event he ran for 45 km and kept marching on for another 11 km, which, for a runner, on a treadmill, is not the most funny thing to do. Chapeau!

Georg Mayer

A runner of more than forty years and an ultrarunner for two decades I wanted to join Team Austria in running myself (and not only in summing up the event). However, due to a pulled muscle in my right thigh on Wednesday, I was not sure what to expect when departing at Sunday 9.30 a.m. I set up my small camp on a field in Burgenland drew a starting line into the gravel and started running. After about 90 minutes my right thigh started hurting again and after one hour more I gave running a quit in order not to risk a serious injury.
