2024 IAU Athlete of the Year nomination period

Updated nomination list on January 13th.

The year 2024 has concluded, which means we are now initiating the IAU Athlete of the Year Award process to recognize the achievements from the past year. This year, we hosted three IAU Championships: we kicked off with two 24-hour continental championships and wrapped up in December with the 100 km World Championships.

As we continue to build on our legacy year after year, we are excited to present the list of automatic nominations, along with the steps for the 2024 IAU Athletes of the Year Award. A total of at most 26 (twenty-six) athletes (men and women athletes combined) will make the final nomination list (the number will only be increased under excruciating circumstances, on discussion of the IAU Executive Council).

As mentioned above there were 3 IAU Major Championships in 2024, as well as 3 new IAU Records, therefore there are 20 athletes making automatic nomination from the IAU Championships (all medalists) and new IAU records holder were added to the list. There are only six (6) remining spots open for nomination.

The remaining six (6) spots on the nomination list will be open for recommendations from the general audience. Only runners participating at IAU Labeled events will be taken into consideration.

Please send your nominations via email for available spots no later than January 27th 2025 to:

Jacek.Bedkowski@iau-ultramarathon.org

Hilmy.Aboud.Said@iau-ultramarathon.org

The nominees receiving the most nominations will fill the remaining six (6) spots. Once the nominees have been compiled, the final list will be published no later than January 30th so the Athletes can be moved on to, the voting stage of this process.

The voting will only be open to the IAU Executive Council, two members of the Athletes Commission and the Member Federations with each holding one (1) applicable vote. The process will start on January 30th 2025 and will end on February 14th 2025.

Each eligible voting individual has to vote for their top three (3) choices for men and for women from the final list of nominated athletes.

  • 1st Choice: 5 points
  • 2nd Choice: 3 points
  • 3rd Choice: 1 point
