Svein Arne was European Athletics’ fifth president since the organisation’s inauguration in 1970, after being first elected in 2015 and then re-elected last year.
He died in Oslo today after failing to recover from a serious cerebrovascular accident, commonly known as a stroke, that he suffered while at home during the evening of Sunday 15 March.
It is with a heavy heart I learned yesterday of Svein´s passing. The relationship between IAU and European Athletics really flourished under his leadership. Svein was an outstanding leader for the sports of athletics. On behalf the IAU I extend our deepest condolences to Svein´s family, the European Athletics family and the global athletics community. Rest In Peace Svein.– Nadeem Khan, IAU President
