|Migliozzi and Vrajic Return to Doha to make the Podium |
The 2nd IAU 50 km World Championships takes place on Nov 11th 2016 on Aspire grounds in Doha, Qatar. The 2.5km course will take runners through a new course around the Aspire facility giving the runners a glimpse over a different part of the Aspire park.
Tony Migliozzi (USA) last year´s winner in a time of 2:52:09 is back to defend his title. He will have a tough competition in the front with several top athletes participating in this year´s event. The charge will be led by Colleen Makaza (ZIM) who has had an outstanding season and knows the streets around Aspire very well having won the last edition of the 50km World Trophy Final in 2014.
Other athletes who will be vying for a spot on the podium would include British speedster Ross Houston who has a recent best of 2:56:37, Niels Buber (GER) with a personal best of 2:55:16 and the Kenyan trio of Charles Maina, Arnold Kiptoi and Samuel Ongeki along with Zivanai Dombojena (ZIM). The field is quite fast and the race might come down to the last few laps.
In the women´s race, Marija Varjic (CRO) is the top podium finisher from 2015 coming into the event having raced in Doha last year finishing in the silver medal spot. After having run in Rio, Varjic will be looking to move to the top of the podium that has alluded her through world championships career.
She will be joined up in the front by a number of fast women in this field that includes Petra Pastorova (CZE) with a personal best of 3:30:37 this year, former London Olympian Tanith Maxwell who has had an outstanding season finishing second at the Two Oceans combined with Rebecca Hilland (GBR) and Caroline Boller (USA).
It promises to be an exciting race in both the men´s and women´s field. Athletes have ample opportunities to get familiarized with the course as the race hotel is a few hundred meters from the start line.
Race start at 6pm (Qatar time) on Friday, Nov. 11th.
